Overview

Digital x-rays, also known as digital radiographs, are performed as part of an annual exam to allow a better view of your mouth. Digital x-rays allow Dr. Kenneth Ingber and his dental team to diagnose issues that are not easily visible, and to learn about the health of the inside of your teeth, jawbone, and gums. There are many dental concerns that can be seen on x-rays, such as cavities, decay, cysts, abscesses, bone loss, and impactions. When these issues are identified early, they may have more treatment options that are less invasive. During your annual dental exam at Ingber Dental in Washington, D.C., digital imaging will help our team to diagnose and treat oral health problems.

Best Candidates

In general, digital imaging is a part of an annual dental exam. They can be administered for prevention or if you are experiencing a specific problem. Though digital x-rays use less radiation than traditional film x-rays, Ingber Dental tries to minimize each patient's exposure. While they are generally safe for any patient, women who are breastfeeding or pregnant should inform a member of our team at the beginning of the dental exam so special precautions can be taken.

What to Expect

Generally done at the beginning of your appointment, digital x-rays take about 5 – 10 minutes to complete. Most patients will have a series of x-rays taken to include all sections. After they are done, they are uploaded and can be viewed during your exam. We will be able to assess if there are any issues and talk about possible treatments.

Follow-Up

A series of x-rays will usually be done annually at your dental exam. At some visits, a whole mouth series may be needed to get a complete view of the teeth, gums, and oral bones. Your x-rays will be saved with other information at Ingber Dental so we can identify changes over time and chart any growing concerns.

Insurance Coverage

Generally, dental insurance plans will pay for digital x-ray costs as part of an annual dental exam. Our office will contact your insurance to calculate any payments. For any out-of-pocket expenses or if you do not have dental insurance, Ingber Dental accepts many payment methods and we can assist you with finding medical financing.
